- Population refers to the total number of inhabitants of a given area.
- The current global population stands at around 7.5 to 8 billion people according to various estimates.
- The world's population is unevenly distributed: while some places are densely populated, other areas are sparsely populated.
- A growing population places increased demands on scarce resources such as water, land , trees and energy.
- Demography is the study of population. It is an important field of study since we need to understand how to provide for the needs of people and how to utilize the human resources of the population for everyone's benefit.
- Our environment and its sustainability is also closely connected with the growing number of people using it.
- An important concept in analyzing population is distribution. This refers to how the population is spread out over a given geographical area.
- Another important concept is that of population density. This is a specific measure used in describing population distribution. It is calculated by diving the number of inhabitants by the area in which they live. It is a rough estimate of how much land each resident is theoretically able to use if needed. Population Density = Number of People / Land Area. The solution to this formula is given in number of people per square km.
