Volcanoes
Do you know that volcanoes are also considered mountains? However, they are formed by an entirely different process. Material in the form of ash and dust, lava bombs and liquid lava pour out of the volcano's vent and layers of such material pile up near the opening over time to form a mountain. The shape of the mountain depends on the type of material ejected. Basic lava produces wide cones with smooth sides while acid lava produces steep-sided cones with rugged flanks. Ash cones are also steep-sided but smooth. Mount Fujiyama in Japan is a famous example of a volcanic mountain.
Plateaus
A plateau is an area of highland consisting of relatively flat terrain that rises sharply above the surrounding land on one or all sides. If a plateau experiences intense weathering and erosion it can become dissected. The surface becomes rugged and develops its own hill-slopes and valley formations. Like mountains, plateaus can form from uplift or from volcanic activity - where several elongated fissures emit lava to build up an area of highland over time.
The Deccan Plateau in India is a well-known plateau.
Peneplains
A peneplain occurs when mountains and other highlands are worn down or denuded by weathering and erosion to almost the level of a plain.
Plains
These are landscapes of flat to gently undulating terrain. Most of the world's major cities are built on plains. These areas are most suitable for the construction of homes, industries and transportation systems. Rivers bring nutrients to floodplains which make them fertile for farming. However, one hazard of living on plains is that they are susceptible to flooding during periods of heavy rain.
